Associates of the Boston Public Library Writer-in-Residence, 2020-2021
My selection as the 2020-2021 Writer-in-Residence came as quite a surprise. I applied for the fellowship in 2018, 2019, and 2020, with different iterations of the same novel in progress. The fact that I was awarded the fellowship in my third year of revising the novel shows a bit about how the writing process works. Only through consistent effort does our writing improve. Then, one day, when you least expect it, and perhaps when you need it most, your work starts to get noticed.
I used the support of the Associates of the BPL to focus on revising my historical young adult novel, All You Have to Do, which is now being published by Kokila, an imprint of Penguin Young Readers.
At the virtual reception in October 2020, I read from my manuscript along with the outgoing writer in residence, Shawnna Thomas. At the virtual reception in October, 2021, I read another scene from my novel, alongside the incoming fellows. You can watch the recording here.
