Novel in Progress
All You Have to Do
My novel in progress, All You Have to Do, is a partly historical novel set in 1968 and 1995. A college student searches for his place in the Black Power movement by joining a student takeover on campus; and a high school senior tries to change the culture of his prep school amidst controversy over the Million Man March. In alternating narrative threads, two generations of a Black, middle-class family “decide who [they] are and force the world to deal with [them], not with its idea of [them]” (quoting Baldwin).
In writing this novel, I am inspired by my family’s experiences in private preparatory schools and my mother’s experience growing up as the Civil Rights Era gave way to Black Power.
